At Twitchcon Las Vegas 2023, Airlock brought Cash App and the FGC together for an epic night of trash talk, tense matches, and big payouts. Cash App wanted to authentically reach the Fighting Game Community (FGC) through an activation that felt organic and familiar to fans of the scene. This led to hosting a “Salty Suite” where North America’s top players would be flown out to play money matches and hang out in a hotel suite on the Vegas strip.

Cash App sponsored the whole evening and paid players live on the spot through their accounts. Thanks to the help of our partner, TampaNeverSleeps (TNS, a long-standing production team for FGC events), we could include the whole community and bring them along for the ride.
Airlock brought our A-game to this event by creating a custom-made Spacestation Gaming controller to give away. This one-of-a-kind fight stick was something we surprised everyone with to emphasize Airlock & Cash App’s dedication to the FGC. We also provided custom-made print graphics to deck out the suite and created content throughout the evening with interviews, brand promos, and more. This happened alongside the night-long broadcast that TNS helped run with show matches, crew battles, and our famous “rumble royale”, a last-man-standing event.
The night truly celebrated the FGC and the grassroots community that makes it all special. Attendees noted “feeling 17 again” as if they were back gaming in their buddies’ basement, just as we hoped they would. Through this activation, Cash App generated highly positive sentiment from participants and fans on social media and Twitch chat. The Fighting Game Community has seen a recent surge in popularity during 2023. With landmark events EVO 2023 Street Fighter reaching a peak viewership of 442,000 concurrent viewers, it’s not slowing down. The grassroots nature and communal passion of the FGC has pushed it to new heights as Riot Games’ “Project L” looms on the horizon. Seeing a publisher as prestigious as Riot enter the FGC indicates it’s only up from here. Airlock is excited to continue supporting the FGC as we plan more events for 2024 and beyond.
